via con dios gator. come back to share the results of your great summer adventure.

Song of the Builders

mary oliver

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God -

a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope

it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

I've always now and, then ran my dishwasher empty with some apple cider vinegar in it. It leaves a nice fresh smell and, attacks the whatever's. This past year I have switched over to a bio friendly liquid and, understand why those mandated to use it in other states cross state lines to smuggle the petro  and / or ones containg phosphates  back in . The bio ones leave water marks and, a film on flatware and dishes. this seemed to be a huge problem in the last couple of years with the drought in the southeast and the water war between georgia and florida. desalinization is scary, imagine what that does to life in the bay? did you catch the article the other day on sonar and the beaching of whales? everything we do has a consequence somewhere in the ecosystem.

Well, we scored one on Georgia. Any new home built there should have a rain catch system and, to continue to sod all to heck there makes my rump sore. I missed the recent sonar kill article but, have read of it before and, it is sad. I guess there is never no hope / freedom for Tibet when all of Chinas water is polluted and, Tibet so pristine. Judge rules against Atlanta in regional water wars

- Associated Press Writers

ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta and its 4 million residents have almost no rights to a massive federal reservoir and must stop taking water from it within three years unless Congress authorizes continued withdrawals, a federal judge ruled Friday.

The devastating ruling against Georgia says nearly all the state's withdrawals are illegal because the reservoir, Lake Lanier, wasn't built for water supply. U.S. District Court Judge Paul Magnuson acknowledged use of the lake can't stop immediately because it is metro Atlanta's main water supply but said the state needs permission from Congress.

Blue Gold: World Water Wars.
Sam Bozzo, Director. Purple Turtle
Films, Canada, 2008. 90 minutes.
DVD, $24.95, C$34.95. www.
bluegold-worldwaterwars.com.
Sam Bozzos award-winning
Blue Gold addresses an important
topic. Many in the developed
world (certainly in the
United States) take water for
granted in the same way that
they take the air they breathe
for granted. However, as the
film makes clear, water is increasingly
being treated as a commodity, like oil, and people are losing
the rights to it within their own countries and for their own land.
Bozzo begins by presenting basic facts and answering fundamental
questions such as why the water cycle we learned about in elementary
school isnt enough to keep our water supplies stable.
The film paints a grim picture of the politics surrounding
the exploitation of water resources.
From Grenoble to Atlanta, government representatives
have been accused of taking bribes to support
the privatization of water supplies. The World Bank
has made such privatization a condition for debt
relief. Violence has broken out, as in Cochabamba,
Bolivia, where even the rainwater was privatized.
The movie is not without flaws. It is fairly one-sided,
and, in covering a lot of ground, it makes some sweeping
generalizations. Nonetheless, it is packed with verifiable
stories and facts.
In a postscreening discussion, Bozzo explained that
he had originally planned a sequel to The Man Who Fell
to Earth (which is about an alien race trying to get
Earths water). For background, he read Maude Barlow
and Tony Clarkes Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop the
Corporate Theft of the Worlds Water. Horrified about
the lack of coverage of the situation, he gave up fiction
and turned to documentary. Barbara R. Jasny

Someone in town makes a spearmint one for me. Over the counter I use Icy Hot which is a balm. I could not copy the ingredient page but, you can go to it's site and look. I also like the Badger products and, they have a very comprehensive page on the ingredients they use.

As an aside, Florida has taken large steps to insure the integrity of honey. They may be the first in the world to do so. I'm adding the press release here. And, good to read you and, Cat this fine morning:) Gator

Bronson Announces First Regulation In
The Nation Banning Additives In Honey

TALLAHASSEE - Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson announced today that his department has instituted the first regulation in the nation and perhaps the world prohibiting any additives, chemicals or adulterants in honey produced, processed or sold in Florida.

The regulation, which takes effect tomorrow (July 14), provides the first ever Standard of Identity for honey.

We want to assure consumers that the product that they are buying is pure, Bronson said. Too often in the past, honey has been cut with water or sugar, and sometimes even contaminated with insecticides or antibiotics. In the future, when youre paying for honey in this state, pure honey is what you will get.

State Rep. Alan Hays, of Umatilla, has been a major advocate of the new regulation, which is supported by Floridas honey industry, and joined Bronson at a press conference here today to unveil the new rule.

I am pleased that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is leading the way for all America in establishing this standard by which all honey may now be measured, Hays said. Commissioner Bronson and the leaders of the honey industry beekeepers and honey processors are to be applauded for their leadership in protecting not only the health of Floridians but also in protecting this industry which is so vital to the production of food products for all mankind.

Under terms of the new regulation, honey containing anything other than the natural food product resulting from the harvest of nectar by honeybees is considered an adulterated or mislabeled product. Such products are subject to a stop sale order one in which a manufacturer, processor or merchant would be served with an order prohibiting the products sale. Repeat offenders would face fines of up to $500 per violation.

Florida is the fourth leading honey producing state in the country with cash receipts to beekeepers of more than $15 million in 2008 and an industry that has an economic impact estimated at $40 million a year.  It employs more than 500 Floridians.

As a result of a flood of adulterated honey from overseas into Florida in 2006, a petition was submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) later that year by five major honey producers and processors, asking the federal agency to establish a U.S. standard of identity for honey.  Two years later, the FDA responded that due to other pressing matters, it would be unable to review the petition.

At that point, the industry asked Bronsons department if it would consider developing a standard of identity for the product, and todays announcement is the culmination of that effort.

Bronson noted that despite efforts in various quarters, international governing bodies have to date been unable to establish an international definition of or standard of identity for honey, making it likely that Floridas regulation governing honey may be the first of its kind anywhere.

Yes. I'm not in the part of Florida that is considered tropical and, a few more palms and, struggling bananas are all the tropical plants I have. But, it does look so with the palms in the foreground. Gator

I take Tylenol Extra Strength once or twice a month.  That's it for pills for me.  I just don't take them.  As for the hangover thing, I've heard that you should take it after drinking and before bed with 2 glasses of water.

Well

How the Food Makers Captured Our Brains

23well-600.jpg
Published: June 22, 2009

As head of the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. David A. Kessler served two presidents and battled Congress and Big Tobacco. But the Harvard-educated pediatrician discovered he was helpless against the forces of a chocolate chip cookie.

Go to Well »

In an experiment of one, Dr. Kessler tested his willpower by buying two gooey chocolate chip cookies that he didnt plan to eat. At home, he found himself staring at the cookies, and even distracted by memories of the chocolate chunks and doughy peaks as he left the room. He left the house, and the cookies remained uneaten. Feeling triumphant, he stopped for coffee, saw cookies on the counter and gobbled one down.

Why does that chocolate chip cookie have such power over me? Dr. Kessler asked in an interview. Is it the cookie, the representation of the cookie in my brain? I spent seven years trying to figure out the answer.

The result of Dr. Kesslers quest is a fascinating new book, The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (Rodale).

During his time at the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Kessler maintained a high profile, streamlining the agency, pushing for faster approval of drugs and overseeing the creation of the standardized nutrition label on food packaging. But Dr. Kessler is perhaps best known for his efforts to investigate and regulate the tobacco industry, and his accusation that cigarette makers intentionally manipulated nicotine content to make their products more addictive.

In The End of Overeating, Dr. Kessler finds some similarities in the food industry, which has combined and created foods in a way that taps into our brain circuitry and stimulates our desire for more.

When it comes to stimulating our brains, Dr. Kessler noted, individual ingredients arent particularly potent. But by combining fats, sugar and salt in innumerable ways, food makers have essentially tapped into the brains reward system, creating a feedback loop that stimulates our desire to eat and leaves us wanting more and more even when were full.

Dr. Kessler isnt convinced that food makers fully understand the neuroscience of the forces they have unleashed, but food companies certainly understand human behavior, taste preferences and desire. In fact, he offers descriptions of how restaurants and food makers manipulate ingredients to reach the aptly named bliss point. Foods that contain too little or too much sugar, fat or salt are either bland or overwhelming. But food scientists work hard to reach the precise point at which we derive the greatest pleasure from fat, sugar and salt.

The result is that chain restaurants like Chilis cook up hyper-palatable food that requires little chewing and goes down easily, he notes. And Dr. Kessler reports that the Snickers bar, for instance, is extraordinarily well engineered. As we chew it, the sugar dissolves, the fat melts and the caramel traps the peanuts so the entire combination of flavors is blissfully experienced in the mouth at the same time.

Foods rich in sugar and fat are relatively recent arrivals on the food landscape, Dr. Kessler noted. But today, foods are more than just a combination of ingredients. They are highly complex creations, loaded up with layer upon layer of stimulating tastes that result in a multisensory experience for the brain. Food companies design food for irresistibility, Dr. Kessler noted. Its been part of their business plans.

But this book is less an exposé about the food industry and more an exploration of us. My real goal is, How do you explain to people whats going on with them? Dr. Kessler said. Nobody has ever explained to people how their brains have been captured.

The book, a New York Times best seller, includes Dr. Kesslers own candid admission that he struggles with overeating.

I wouldnt have been as interested in the question of why we cant resist food if I didnt have it myself, he said. I gained and lost my body weight several times over. I have suits in every size.

This is not a diet book, but Dr. Kessler devotes a sizable section to food rehab, offering practical advice for using the science of overeating to our advantage, so that we begin to think differently about food and take back control of our eating habits.

One of his main messages is that overeating is not due to an absence of willpower, but a biological challenge made more difficult by the overstimulating food environment that surrounds us. Conditioned hypereating is a chronic problem that is made worse by dieting and needs to be managed rather than cured, he said. And while lapses are inevitable, Dr. Kessler outlines several strategies that address the behavioral, cognitive and nutritional factors that fuel overeating.

Planned and structured eating and understanding your personal food triggers are essential. In addition, educating yourself about food can help alter your perceptions about what types of food are desirable. Just as many of us now find cigarettes repulsive, Dr. Kessler argues that we can also undergo similar perceptual shifts about large portion sizes and processed foods. For instance, he notes that when people who once loved to eat steak become vegetarians, they typically begin to view animal protein as disgusting.

The advice is certainly not a quick fix or a guarantee, but Dr. Kessler said that educating himself in the course of writing the book had helped him gain control over his eating.

For the first time in my life, I can keep my weight relatively stable, he said. Now, if you stress me and fatigue me and put me in an airport and the plane is seven hours late Im still going to grab those chocolate-covered pretzels. The old circuitry will still show its head.

The web site has petitions and advocacy for healthier child school lunches. I hope it comes to the theaters in my area so I can commune with those concerned. If not hopefully there will be a house showing at some point. I went to one for the documentary Gimmie Green which was done locally and made it to Sundance and, it was a very nice gathering. Gator

I hope they are able to increase awareness about school lunches. There has been some progress made, the soda pop and junk machines have been taken out of most middle and high schools but when I see the school menus printed in the paper im shocked at what the kids are fed things like bologna and cheese on white? or mac and cheese or 2 hot dogs and fries? add to that the fake taters, the pressed mystery meat served on special occasions like thanksgiving and its no wonder that diabetes is on the rise in the under 18 group. it would be great if parents sent their kids to school with some sort of brown bag nutritious lunch but chances are its more of the same processed meat and cheese on white with a candy bar for dessert. add to that the removal of school sports and even recess as unnecessary and you can see why so many kids are developing weight problems. too bad. i like things like the wii fit video game that at least gets kids up and moving tho id really like to see some after school sports progams for kids. teach them the lifetime active leisure habits that can stay with them.\
and speaking of schools. while i was out and about today i saw a sign outside of a small town fathers day pancake breakfast. free dna test for kids. thats just fraught with worry for me. lil suzy and johnny are sweet and 8 now but in a decade when maybe they are not so sweet their dna is on file somewhere for the plucking.

i agree and at least in my kids school, the lunches, for the most part are pretty good and the selection available includes fresh fruits and vegetables.  now, whether the kids take them and eat them is another question and imo, where the problem lies.  one meal a day at school is not gonna change any trend in childhood obesity and the epidemic rates at which children are being diagnosed with adult type 2 diabetes.  just like when our schools initiated the rule of no sweet treats during school, which means the teachers cannot give sweet or candy treats or parents cannot send in cookies or cupcakes for the children to share on their birthdays.  not gonna change anything.  any parent can send in anything they like for their own child and the teachers now ask for and give out the salty snacks instead, potato chips, cheeses doodles, etc.  candy and other sweet treats can and are passed out as the kids leave the classroom for the day.  and really what is it going to change?  many, many kids come to school with mcd's or burger king  breakfasts or a donut and coke for breakfast that the parents bought them (i have seen it more times than i can remember) or the school will serve milk, orange juice and a pop tart for breakfast!  the obese kids are still gonna go home to most likely some unhealthy, fat laden processed dinner after munching on junk all afternoon while sitting around playing video games and watching tv.

as far as after school sports and other physical activity....who really is gonna attend these?  the obese, video game playing/tv watching kids....nah.  schools can try, but nothing is gonna change till the obese, tv watching parents change their ways.  and imo, by the time kids get to school, its probably too late.  if the kids are already on their way to obesity and a non physical lifestyle learned from home, most times, the school is not gonna change anything.

it sickens me to stand at my kids' school watching the number of children who are on their way to obesity....some are so big that they already have that obese "waddle-type" walk.....no

Food, Inc. Poster

In
Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nations food
industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly thats been hidden
from the American consumer with the consent of our governments
regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nations food supply is now
controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of
consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of
workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising and
often shocking truths about what we eat, how its produced, who we
have become as a nation and where we are going from here.
