North Korea May Seek 'Good Will Gesture' in Talks Over Jailed Journalists
TV reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee were sentenced to 12 years in a North Korean labor prison. With the sentence, the likelihood seemed to increase that the prisoners would be used as pawns in the ongoing standoff between North Korea and its neighbors and the West.
im amazed that these kinds of things still happen in a time of complete global awareness. im wondering, would the us negotiate in the same way if these journalists were men? i think they might try for release but i suspect those in power would be more willing to let them wait it out in prison which alarms me on so many levels. it makes women the more vulnerable and valuable targets
I heard this story on NPR yesterday. The whole thing is just appalling. The five day trial was held behind closed doors, the charges are vague, at best, and these two women get to spend the next 12 years in a labor prison, and have no court to file an appeal.
i was listening to the coverage of this yesterday. apparently there is a "window" of 10 days or so where something(nebulous) might occur to stop this and that something would be the appearance in no korea of a high ranking us diplomat or spokesperson. mixed in with that commentary was a note that apparently there is some coup in the making happening in no korea which may make the situation regarding these women worse.
