yeah but so too is the underlying condition that creates the need for the question, its something that is topical and in the news as much as any of the other questions asked all of which are contentious and have become somewhat polarized. i think it speaks to the level of hatred that still exists out there that this is where the big oooo came in. the others were asked about tarp funds, universal health care, domestic violence, the war in afghanistan. why is the gay question unfair?
It's not, in that context. IMO NONE of those questions are appropriate for that competition.

That said, Miss USA is going to be asked divisive and unfair questions like that. After watching the tape, I'm not fully convinced that she (as she put it) "lost HER crown" because of her personal POV, so much as she didn't WIN the crown because she didn't respond to the question as Miss USA, but instead as a politically opinionated woman -- the gig is as an ambassador, as much as anything, really, right? Her reply lacked diplomatic vagueness, and she went right to it, saying about how in HER country marriage should be just between a man and a woman. Nothing about how the people make the rules, the laws here, and whatever the people of any state decide is up to them, and kept HER personal beliefs out of it. Again: In theory, this was a test drive, and she wasn't just speaking for herself -- she was speaking as Miss USA.

yeah i agree with you here.  dont they get brownie points for grace under pressure? she is getting all of the attention. i dont think anyone remembers who won today but they do know her name. if i were the winner id be steamed today.

seems like miss cali stepped in it big time. with her answer to perez hilton.  im of two minds on this. on the one hand it is her opinion and shes entitled to it no matter how vile it is but on the other hand if her opinion was that it was ok to bake kittens in her oven and she lost on account of that opinion would we public opinion be confused on this?

I had a friend whose sister was in the Miss USA pageant -- and the smart money was on her winning (literally.) Then came the "question" segment, and they asked her: "If you could spend a day with any living person, who would it be?"

Of course the RIGHT answer was:
My father
My mother
The President
My religious leader

but not Susie -- her answer was: "Woody Allen."

(This was WAY back in the EARLY 70's, like 1971, before all that Woody Allen unpleasantry stuff surfaced)

Susie came in second runner up.

I've often wondered if she regretted that answer -- I suspect not. Thing is, she knew BEFORE that came out of her mouth what the "right" answer was, and it wasn't Woody Allen.

I cannot tell you the respect I have for Susie for that answer -- had it IMMEDIATELY, although we all knew what it meant for her. The thing is? What the judges are looking for is a winner who will provide PREDICTABLE answers, and as middle of the road as possible. That's it: make NO waves, and no surprises.

the thing that gets me on this, is that yes, she can have her opinion.  nothing wrong with it and lots of people feel like her.  heck there are hordes of people that still do not feel that blacks and whites should marry each other....however, what i am repulsed by is that she only stated her opinion and in such a way as to bar any other.  what i mean is, she could have said, "i am opposed to same sex marriage.  it is how i was raised and what i believe."  fine that is her opinion, feelings, beliefs.  however she could have handled it better and not betrayed her beliefs, by further stating (if she actually is not a bigot): "and while that is what I believe, i also do not agree with discrimination and the granting or withholding of human rights/civil rights to one or any group of people.
