Are they "dropping" them or are they acting in the great tradition of capitalism and bundling them up to sell? Our cable company has taken many of the popular channels (hgtv, food, fine living, lifetime ... etc.) and bundled them to create packages. And of course they'll spread several of the most popular channels over several different packages .. so you either choose or you pay.

apparently they are eliminating the "expanded basic cable package" and selling instead the digi packages. so in groups of 3 or 4 they move the channels off of basic and onto digi. think vcr vs dvd. the problem is that it will eventually double the price for cable service. i live in a rural area and people have told me that sattelite things may blink out during bad weather. well bad weather happens here for all but 2 months out of the year tho may and sept are glorious:) and cable seems to be covered in some non compete law so theres no competition to bring the cost down.  so im protesting:)

Will there still be such a thing as free tv?

i guess for awhile there will be hence the coupon program. i would think this would be some sort of homeland security issue. i do know that these cable people have to include all of the local channels in the packages and thats prolly because if info needs to get out to a community that is one important way to get it across.

I'm hoping the cable companies eventually go to the "pay only for what you watch" system, although there doesn't seem to be am much potential for profit there ... which translates to ... it probably won't happen.

im not sure that it wouldnt be profitable. i mean that might move me off the fence if i could get 50 channels that i might really watch instead of the 10 out of 100 situation as it is now. i might even pay a little more and thats saying a lot cause im...er...frugal:)

They're good things, The Learning Channel, Dog the Bounty Hunter and on and on. It's a good thing, I couldn't imagine any argument to the contrary. At least not for them to be an option at all in your local lineup. blankstare.gif

im still warring with them. it will be interesting to see what happens come june 12th. thus far as each of the various channels has become digitized or whatever theyre doing they get dropped from my lineup. im thinking that by the cutoff theyll have to deal with me and the other holdouts. so far theyve managed to lower the cost a bit with a teaser rate and free boxes for 4 tvs. of course when the rate expires its back to the jacked up rate and 7.62 plus tax for each box. aint doin it. im thinking they are gonna have to give it to me for free since they cant charge me for nothing, right?

See it's funny how doing the "right thing" is actually subjective. I believe, he believes, as does Kim and Castro and well, you know...

id go along with castro but think chavez and kim are more about tweaking the rest of the world than they are about doing what is right for their people or for the rest of the world for that matter.

that they believe they are doing the necessary and "right" things.  There's a National Geographic Channel special tonight, I think at 9. Looks excellent. It's an inside gitmo documentary.

Yeah, 9. Tomorrow looks good for Jesus tomb too.

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/tv-schedule

ooo ill have to catch the first if i still have that channel. the cable company has been dropping them right and left. last time i turned on the tube there were 5 or 6 sporting events, several infomercials and lots of depressing anxiety provoking news channels. ive been watching most of my tv online these days. shape of things to come i guess. i hear the big 3 are promising more reality tv for the fall. if i wanted to watch reality tv id turn off the set and attend to the reality of my own life. lol

Her peeps include Hugo Chavez, so I'm sure she's a rock star in Venezuela.

well of course he is and ill bet it was her idea for him to join the adopt a gitmo prisoner movement. hugo is always thinking about doing the right thing!

Hmmmmm I wouldn't bet on it. We tend to remember our beauty pageant contestants more for their faux pas and dabbling in infamy than we do the average or above average ones.

-- Miss Teen S. Carolina's answer when asked why Americans can't find the US on a map

-- Miss USA Universe falling down in the formal wear competition

-- X rated pictures -- stripped of crown (Vanessa Williams)

Anita Bryant's whole "hate" campaign, and of course ...

"Sarah Palin."

Now: identify (without cheating) the bright beauty pageant contestants.

See? smile

Miss Universe says had "lot of fun" in Guantanamo

Reuters News,
By PASCAL FLETCHER
MIAMI (Reuters) - A "relaxing, calm, beautiful place" may not be everyone's description of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States holds about 240 prisoners in a detention center that has drawn condemnation from around the world.

But this was the opinion of reigning Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela, who visited the U.S. naval facility in eastern Cuba this month on a trip organized by the United Service Organizations (USO) which supports U.S. troops.

The Guantanamo Bay base, whose presence Cuba's government has contested as illegal for years, is used by U.S. authorities as a prison camp for foreign terrorism suspects. Critics have condemned it as a symbol of abuses in Washington's war on terrorism launched after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Caracas-born Mendoza, 22, who visited the facility March 20-25 along with Miss USA Crystle Stewart, 27, enthused about her Guantanamo trip as an "incredible experience" in a blog entry posted on the Miss Universe website dated March 27, 2009 (http://www.missuniverse.com/missuniverse/blog.php ).

"It was a loooot of fun!," Mendoza wrote, describing how she and Stewart met U.S. military personnel and took rides around the camp, which is encircled by a barbed-wire fenced, minefields and watchtowers. She said they also visited a bar on the base and the "unbelievable" beach there.

"We visited the Detainees camps and we saw the jails, where they shower, how the(y) recreate themselves with movies, classes of art, books. It was very interesting," she wrote.

"I didn't want to leave, it was such a relaxing place, so calm and beautiful," she added.

Former detainees and human rights groups have alleged the use of torture, including "waterboarding" (simulated drowning) and other physical abuses, at the Guantanamo prison.

Britain announced last week it would investigate whether members of its secret services were complicit in the torture of a British resident released from Guantanamo Bay last month.

Spanish prosecutors may decide this week whether to start an investigation of six former officials from George W. Bush's administration in connection with the torture of Guantanamo detainees.

In one of his first acts in office, U.S. President Barack Obama has set a one-year deadline for shutting the prison.

The Pentagon said last month it had received renewed reports of prisoner abuse during a recent review of conditions at Guantanamo, but had concluded that all prisoners were being kept in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

Recounting her "memorable" trip, Mendoza, who was crowned Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam, said: "We also met the Military dogs, and they did a very nice demonstration of their skills weirdface.gif  All the guys from the Army were amazing with us."

Before the visit, USO had announced Mendoza and Stewart were being "deployed" to Guantanamo on an entertainment tour to visit U.S. troops abroad to "boost morale."
