Critics say new Afghan law 'legalizes rape'

It applies to Shiites, says husband entitled to sex 'as and when he desires'

KABUL - A new Afghan law makes it legal for men to rape their wives, human rights groups and some Afghan lawmakers said Thursday, accusing President Hamid Karzai of signing the legislation to bolster his re-election prospects.

Critics worry the legislation undermines hard-won rights for women enacted after the fall of the Taliban's strict Islamist regime.

The law which some lawmakers say was never debated in parliament is intended to regulate family life inside Afghanistan's Shiite community, which makes up about 20 percent of this country of 30 million people. The law does not affect Afghan Sunnis.

un freakin believable

yes it is. i heard this on the news the other day. im not surprised tho. look at the laws on this in the us. lack of consent is not spousal rape in most states in the us tho it is with stranger rape. one has to be willing to be beaten in a few states or prosecution is a no go.  and thats progress. up until 30 years or so ago a spouse could not be charged with rape under any circumstances and its only been in the last 15 years that the majority of states have had any provisions for this.

The children, ranging in age from 20 months to 15, were stopped behind a school bus in their family's 1993 Pontiac when Wilkerson's 2004 Freightliner semi rolled over the car. Both vehicles crashed into the bus, and the car burst into flames, killing everyone inside.

Killed were Nikki Mann, 15; her siblings, Elizabeth Mann, 15, Johnny Mann, 13, and Heaven Mann, 3; two cousins, Ashley Keen, 14, and Miranda Finn, 10; and Anthony Lamb, 20 months, the Manns' foster brother who was to be adopted the next day. The children's grandfather, William Edward Scott, died hours later from a heart attack the family said was caused by grief.

this is horrid. how sad.

I don't remember if other places do it but, here the dot will erect (I love that word:) a marker indicating a traffic death. Life is so hurried a lot of them go un noticed by me. But, this site always makes me take pause. In addition to, are large wooden butterfly's and, angle statues for each child. Even without them, it is a sacred site for me. The article failed to mention the children on the school bus. 2 severly injured. All permantly scarred. It is just one of those things one must never forget to have a moment for. Gator

Angela Parenteau, 32, allegedly told authorities she asked her daughter to drive the children, whose ages range from 1 to 4 years old, because she was sick and on medication, the Great Falls Tribune reported.

The mother faces four counts of endangering the welfare of children and one count of allowing an unauthorized minor to operate a motor vehicle.
Employees at a daycare facility in Great Falls, Mont., alerted police to the situation after the girl arrived there on Wednesday.

uh-oh .. there goes another Mother of the Year nomination

oh my. i wonder how many pillows she had to use to see over the windshield?  and speaking of mother of the year is anyone ready to throttle octomom?  i was actually feeling a bit sorry for her until she fessed to doing it for the money and until the nurses she fired reminded everyone that she was never home bonding with da babies. it must be very difficult to parent with the eyes of the world on you. i think most parents would fail that test but geesh i do hope someone is keeping tabs on those kiddos.
