why do you suppose that those who fight the hardest against sexual difference are the ones who buy the most porn? i think theres a relationship there. perhaps in their thinking its the thinking about sex thats making them act out and if only people wouldnt do those sexual things then they might remain pure of mind. well its only a theory yanno?
Porn in the USA: Conservatives are Biggest Consumers »
Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.
A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.
However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.
The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. And again, eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election--Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.
Churchgoers bought less online porn on Sundays--a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. Not to worry, though: expenditures on other days of the week brought churchgoers in line with the rest of the country.
Okay, again, in the sense of fair play, I've revived this thread because I just read an article on how the Mormon population in Utah is, and has steadily been for years now, on the decline. This is a state Brigham Young populated pretty much before many others had discovered its beauty, and has been predominately Mormon for ... well, decades, if not a century or two (sorry, not up on my BY history.)
ANYWAY ... the Mormon population there is dwindling, and it's now estimated that by 2030, Mormons will no longer be the majority population of Utah.
You sort of have to wonder how much Redford et al. had in that shift ... Funny, how one person can sometimes made so strong an impact on something, without even trying, or knowing at the time that they're doing it.
It IS a beautiful state. I've been there many times, but ... always was pretty much ill at ease until I crossed the state line outta there.
The whole "porn as a politically conservative endeavor" makes a ton of sense to me, of course, because they're the ones mouthing off about sin all the time, and have to be closeted with their "lustful" ways, whereas liberals don't have that sort of repression going for them, so can sort of shrug it all off and go a different direction.
<wondering how many closeted GLBT people there are living in Utah right now>
In the interest of fair play, I'm compelled to note Utah was the second state/territory in this country to "give" women the right to vote. The feds rescinded it, because of Utah's little issue with polygamy, but they did give it a shot, and renewed that affirmation prior to the ratification of the 19th amendment.
Incidentally -- for those who sneer at the politics of the West in general, know it was predominately the West which lead the way in actually extending the vote to women, even though the activity to make that a national mandate may have been centered in the East. Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, Arizona, -- many states in the West agreed to women's suffrage prior to 1920.

saw a link to a video this morning on my aol screen. a texas pastor talking about his fight with porn in response to this study. the anchor asks several times about the relationship between religion and porn users all of which are blank stared. finally she hits him over the head with the hypocritical question and he gets it. he doesnt much answer it but he got the question. the religion porn distinction is an artifiical one tho. its not about religion per se its more about particular interpretations of religious scripture that become the belief set that allows for intolerance for some folks.
