In the interest of fair play, I'm compelled to note Utah was the second state/territory in this country to "give" women the right to vote. The feds rescinded it, because of Utah's little issue with polygamy, but they did give it a shot, and renewed that affirmation prior to the ratification of the 19th amendment.

Incidentally -- for those who sneer at the politics of the West in general, know it was predominately the West which lead the way in actually extending the vote to women, even though the activity to make that a national mandate may have been centered in the East. Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, Arizona, -- many states in the West agreed to women's suffrage prior to 1920.

saw a link to a video this morning on my aol screen. a texas pastor talking about his fight with porn in response to this study. the anchor asks several times about the relationship between religion and porn users all of which are blank stared. finally she hits him over the head with the hypocritical question and he gets it. he doesnt much answer it but he got the question. the religion porn distinction is an artifiical one tho. its not about religion per se its more about particular interpretations of religious scripture that become the belief set that allows for intolerance for some folks.

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

The biggest consumer, Utah,

averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. And again, eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election--Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.
