Well, ironically, Loudon Wainwright III (II's son, Rufus' Dad) celebrated man-folk singer...Is playing here tomorrow night. He's playing the same little venue Dar did back on the 4th. You can bet everything you own and some you don't I will not be there 3 hours before the show to "find him", won't be there at all. But he can sing about hopping freight trains or hobo draft dodging hokie angst all he likes to his menfriends. I'm looking forward to reading the article, btw. I'm sure I'll have more to say on this. wink.gif

well i just love the avatar. made me jump up and look! the article states that its women who go to folk events and the book remarks that the data doesnt bear this out. i was at a concert a week or so ago and tho it was heavily lesbian populated (it was held at smith college tho so that skews the odds of that a lot)there were men there, quite a few college age men and surprisingly a lot of older men. really, that sort of threw me. why where there men over 50 at a concert for a 30 something butch lesbian singer? and yet they were there in relative droves.

whever i see cheryl wheeler there are always men present and she sort of makes a point of welcoming them which from a marketing perspective seems like an ok idea. i wonder how many of the complaining male artists welcome women who show up?

Hunh. Now, see? I don't give record companies that much credit. By that, I mean, I don't think they "think" one way or the other -- if someone is making money for them, they'll keep 'em no matter what their orientation, rap sheet, etc., and if not, it doesn't matter if they're Donnie OR Marie.

well yeah but in this case clay aikens success was based on his lil "claymates" those young girls who swooned for the geeky guy and called american idol 1,362,000 times to vote for him and then went out and bought his records and went to his concerts. i went with my daughter to one of his concerts out in vegas a few years ago. the place was packed and who could hear over the screaming thongs of girlies holding up their underwear and crying, "clay oh clay!" lol. looked like a beatles meet and greet back in da day.  after he came out the claymates sort of lost interest which translates into a lot fewer sales.

I was reading a chapter from a book this evening. Millennium Folk by Tom Gruning. The title of the chapter is Unnatural acts. Its an interesting read having to do specifically with queerness in the folk music biz.  The book mentions an article written in the NY times in 02 by David Hadju having to do with lesbians in folk music and how they are ruining it for the boys(eyeroll). <Psych

ROFL omg.

<trying to think of a male gay folk singer>

only one i can think of is Rufus. there must be more im sure but it is amazing how quickly the men cry foul when the female participation or reward goes over the minority level.

Well, ftr, I feel really sorry for all those fellas who are having their mojos stomped by those pushy dykes. Shameful. Juuuuuuuuuuust shameful. I think what we need here is some sort of federally funded support group for them. We can call it: "Bail Out The Boys"

lol

News today that American Idol runner up Clay Aiken was given the boot from his record label. While there may be some who would say that his 15 minutes were long over the apparent reason was that he came out last year and had a child out of wedlock and under less than het standards for birthing.

For those who think its okey dokey to be queer in the world these days these jarring examples like Aiken and the reservist mentioned earlier are reminders that, really, not all that much has changed.
