You know, I plan on going to her concert in March. I want to support her and local preformance art. I like pieces of her. I don't intend for that to mean I could do it better. But what I did now was to separate her lyrics from her vocals, her music and her overall "tone". When I do that I realize that the reason I don't feel a bond to her is that she represents the way I feel more so than say, a Dar, or any number of other non confrontational female artists. I don't bond well with sameness, I have much better relationships with opposites. So her line about ( I forget which song it is)

shes not an easy listen i think. she makes you work for it and usually when i listen to music its background and i dont want to get sidetracked thinking poetics. That said creating those small stories in 3 min snippets is so difficult that at times i find myself distracted and in awe of that talent.

isnt it? and thats why cats rule. they stay in the tree doing their cat thing and everybody on the ground goes nuts tryin to figger them out.

 And that's how I feel about things. She's not the nurturing storyteller. I'm no nurturing advisor. That said, I'm NOT coming out of this tree until Dar says to. I don't usually work that hard to "like" an artist, but she is queer(ish) and from NY.

     i really enjoy her. i like her style and her poetics and her way of thinking about the world and is single still on her myspace page?

i like her. shes an interesting musician and i do love her lyrics. She used to tour with utah phillips a lot. i liked him too. rare  for a male singer. he died this year which is a shame. ill miss that voice.

I went prepared with a card. She's now got two email addresses and my number. What ever becomes of that is out of my hands but I did my part. Had a tough time with verbal skills, but I was went prepared. Funny thing is the "mean" sister left me a voice mail after I sent her the pics just to let me know she knew I would make the contact happen. Regardless of my nerves. Said something about determination and all. The message was nice, she must be on new meds. Whatever works :)

Why???? I'm the same way, really. Well, except for some instrumentals.
I'm a lyrics person first, and music person second pretty much, I guess. I can easily tolerate "fair" music if it's got a good line more than the reverse, I guess.

The exceptions for me would be some "religious" tunes, where I just like the music so much, I tolerate the lyrics

Nope, she sounds just like me. Until I start singing. Though I did detect a small blending of the r/w. The esses seem fine, an odd whistle here and there as if there's an invisible gap at #8 and 9. Not pronounced at all. Just detectable. Even in my a moment of unapologetic, silly, worship.

What fantastic photos!  Was that at Mahaffey?  That's such a great place to see a show...very small and not a bad seat in the house.

:) Even better than Mahaffey, the Palladium on 5th Ave and 3rd St. I was a bumbling idiot giving her walking directions from the bus to the Pier. She wanted to go to the Pier! I'm thinking offer her a ride and she's thinking please don't let this fanatic tackle me to the ground...Someone picked up a rental car for her during the show for the after party. I took all of her interior shots while resting against a side column to avoid the mic in face images I had from my center seat. I felt like I was floating through a performance of the Unicorn, she was the Babysitter and I was the five year old. You gotta be a fan to know what any of that means ;)  It's a show I'll never forget.

I dunno, "diminsh" her, or anything anything, but rather because I minored in speech pathology, and probably would have done that professionally, had I not so ached when I dealt with those little kids with cleft palates, and stuff (although I WAS right happy when I "cured" a kid's hearing loss by removing the BEAN from his ear...)  and in watching her perform on DVDs it resonated in that part of me, and I've been curious.
