You know, I plan on going to her concert in March. I want to support her and local preformance art. I like pieces of her. I don't intend for that to mean I could do it better. But what I did now was to separate her lyrics from her vocals, her music and her overall "tone". When I do that I realize that the reason I don't feel a bond to her is that she represents the way I feel more so than say, a Dar, or any number of other non confrontational female artists. I don't bond well with sameness, I have much better relationships with opposites. So her line about ( I forget which song it is)

shes not an easy listen i think. she makes you work for it and usually when i listen to music its background and i dont want to get sidetracked thinking poetics. That said creating those small stories in 3 min snippets is so difficult that at times i find myself distracted and in awe of that talent.

"this little girl breaks furniture, this little girl breaks laws"

that if you leave the damned kitten up the tree it'll eventually find its own way down. Is not angry, but really, true.

isnt it? and thats why cats rule. they stay in the tree doing their cat thing and everybody on the ground goes nuts tryin to figger them out.

And that's how I feel about things. She's not the nurturing storyteller. I'm no nurturing advisor. That said, I'm NOT coming out of this tree until Dar says to. I don't usually work that hard to "like" an artist, but she is queer(ish) and from NY.

thumbsup.gif     i really enjoy her. i like her style and her poetics and her way of thinking about the world and is single still on her myspace page?

rofl.gif "I'm Just Not That Into Her"? ....I used the following site to just read her lyrics.

http://www.metrolyrics.com/search.php Nice and compact. No distraction. No yelling. ;)

LOL.   One of my singer crushes was cruising me once outside of a concert in pittsburgh. after, i went to get a pix with her and she started asking me personal questions and i swear all i did was  look at my toes and mumble yes and no. i could see the interest fade as i stood there. sigh. perhaps one of those unanswered prayer moments tho. i hear shes not an easy person to be with.

Funny thing is the "mean" sister left me a voice mail after I sent her the pics just to let me know she knew I would make the contact happen. Regardless of my nerves. Said something about determination and all. The message was nice, she must be on new meds. Whatever works :)

COOL!!!!!!!

Why???? I'm the same way, really. Well, except for some instrumentals. wink
I'm a lyrics person first, and music person second pretty much, I guess. I can easily tolerate "fair" music if it's got a good line more than the reverse, I guess.

The exceptions for me would be some "religious" tunes, where I just like the music so much, I tolerate the lyrics

<Spirit In The Sky>

For me it has to be both. If the lyrics are great but its really loud, for instance, then i cant listen to it long enough to get the lyrics. ifind music helps me to be more creative so i often have it on when i am working but it has to be subdued enough to not give me brain freeze. mostly i listen to women only and i seem to gravitate toward those with mid range voices with great storied songs.  It also helps if they are funny. I like christine lavin for instance because i think she has a great voice. especially her speaking voice, sounds like a jersey girlie to me or maybe brooklyn.  I also like a lot of her songs for the humor in them.  same with cheryl wheeler. ive got a serious case of the hots for her btw. lol. (in fact im tryin to talk gf into thinking a trip to franklin on the other side of the state on a probably snowy night to hear cheryl is a wonderful way to spend valentines day tho shes balking and thinking a day of skiing followed by feeding her would be far better.)ok, its not so much that cheryls a babe in the usual sense, tho to me, she is, its that earthy, wise, cynical yet hopeful, well traveled persona that she brings to the table. the real pros have a stage presence, some joking and intimate talk, some great lyrics and some tunes that allow the poetic to be heard. if they are rough or unpolished i tend to tune out.

Nope, she sounds just like me. Until I start singing. Though I did detect a small blending of the r/w. The esses seem fine, an odd whistle here and there as if there's an invisible gap at #8 and 9. Not pronounced at all. Just detectable. Even in my a moment of unapologetic, silly, worship.

Okay. Cool. Must just be either the DVD or my aging ears. :) Thanks.

It could also be that damned pedestal I put her on, or my own aging ears.

What fantastic photos!  Was that at Mahaffey?  That's such a great place to see a show...very small and not a bad seat in the house.

:) Even better than Mahaffey, the Palladium on 5th Ave and 3rd St. I was a bumbling idiot giving her walking directions from the bus to the Pier. She wanted to go to the Pier! I'm thinking offer her a ride and she's thinking please don't let this fanatic tackle me to the ground...Someone picked up a rental car for her during the show for the after party. I took all of her interior shots while resting against a side column to avoid the mic in face images I had from my center seat. I felt like I was floating through a performance of the Unicorn, she was the Babysitter and I was the five year old. You gotta be a fan to know what any of that means ;)  It's a show I'll never forget.

Tonights show. Yummy, nothing says it better. She is a stunning all american woman, a witty, and talented singer and songwriter. She is fun, quirky, warm, energetic and somber. She is "all that". And I forgot how her butt shakes when she plays those fast numbers. I felt a little creepy turning the camera to video after all the pre show stalking business. If I didn't have crappola to do tomorrow I would gladly follow her the rest of this southeast part leg of the tour. :)

Oh, there you are,
it's so good to see you,
it's so good to see you,
standing right at my door,
I wish you could stay.

Well, how's your girlfriend?
How's that going?
She never liked me,
oh I wish you could stay.

It might be an ordinary day,
but it seems like more than that to me..

Lines of my forehead,
from trying to thread the needle of this idea,
without letting you know it.

If you said I could
I'd throw the maps right out the window,
take the longest way home.

So I change the subject
and I put on my best smile,
so you won't notice,
so you won't notice what's wrong.

So don't you ask me,
no please don't ask me,
'cause I don't dare tell you,
exactly what's on my mind.

It might be an ordinary day,
but it seems like more than that to me...

I've gathered these pages
of words left unspoken,
letters I didn't send you
would fall right from my fingers.

If you said I could
put my hands where I want to,
set fire to the bedroom.

If you said I could
put it all out on the table,
throw the maps right out the window...

Oh there you are,
it's so good to see you,
it's so good to see you,
I wish you could stay.

Thanks for the link! I had my "met and gret" pre show, though I hung around for about 20 minutes she wasn't coming out for the normal hi's and signings. So I split, only to wave goodbye to her as she drove off to some beer and wine bar in a ford focus.
