I have recently become involved with a pet rescue, and they have similar mounds of paperwork to fill out before allowing a pet to be moved from foster to "furr-ever" homes. I think it has to do with liability and insurance more than anything. I would suggest a rescue - there's a rescue for just about every breed out there - while they may be friendlier, you'll still have to sign as many papers as if you were buying a house.

thanks! ill look into this. im not caring a lot about the breed only that the pup likes being outdoors and likes walks and water since i do a lot of those things on the weekends. small dogs dont so as well on long walks so im sort of looking for a midsize dog tho not another lab. that would be double trouble! lol. mutts are fine with me tho those seem to be rare these days.

The nice thing about rescues, at least the one I'm involved with, is that they give you the opportunity to bring the dog home for a trial stay before committing to the animal.  If the dog doesn't fit in with your household, or get along with kids and other pets, you haven't invested anything but a few days.

Mutts are great dogs.  People always want to say what they're mixed "with."  Half this, half that, part this, part that.  What's wrong with just saying, he's a good ole American mutt?  Isn't that what the rest of us are?

allow me my moment of venting. wtf is up with the doggy social worker movement?ive been looking for a new family member dog.  there is more paperwork and nebby crud involved with getting a pound puppy than one would encounter adopting a kid.
i get that there are evil people in the world who dont care for or abuse their  animals but its getting to be a guilty until proven innocent system of pet adoptions with this hoop jumping that must be done before you can adopt a pet seems to me to be such a hassle that it must scare scads of people away who would otherwise make good pet owners.

first off, congratulations on considering adopting a pound puppy or rescue animal...i did fostering for a rescue for many years, and these animals are so loving and grateful for a full tummy, clean bodies, a warm bed and snuggles......

as far as the paperwork, i think it is more to find the perfect fit for the people and animals involved...yes, they do ask for a vet reference and sometimes a personal reference....and the home visits can be irritating....however, these boys and girls have many times had a rough go at it, and a major goal of rescue groups is to find a forever home for that little soul.....

some groups are less bureaucratic than others and i have found the local government run animal shelters, "pounds," less restrictive than rescue groups....good luck! i know you will find the perfect new family member for you!!
