this is not something new....

from wikipedia:

"In recent years, the official portrait of the President is a photograph until after they leave office."

so, when obama leaves office is when the "official oil painting" portrait will be unveiled.  i think the "news" was about the fact that his photograph is the first to be taken with a digital camera.....

oopsie ... guffaw

One thing I am wondering is what the thoughts of the "living" presidents are of bo's decision to have his picture taken. A photograph as his official portrait. Someone suggested to me it's all a part of his "change" message. I asked if he could also "change" the priority of his messages. One would think. I thought it egotistical and in very poor taste to not "sit" for an official oil painting.

and.....wiki further says that bush's painting was the first presidential painting to be unveiled prior to a president leaving office....

Now, what they do with that is another thing. As for Bush? He lost his swagger years ago. That's not to say he isn't an ass and a clown. But for limelight and center stage I think, not so much.

not so much that hes a center stage kinda person but clearly hes trying to explain his actions to the american people in an effort to change his legacy. i believe what he says as far as the reasons for why he did what he did but i dont think it excuses the actions. 8 years of bad actions may seem like a reasonable thing to him but it looks like bad judgement to most of us. time will tell i suppose but im thinking theres not a lot to work with here.

i hadnt heard this. what did they do with the photo? was it to be used instead of the sitting or used as a photo?

One last thing about the amazing flight story. Our local papers headline ended with "the plane that two birds flew into". Seemed to me it was the other way around. But yeah, the psychological and punitive suits are forthcoming. Maybe one person will make a change for the positive, accept the smoothe and safe incident for what it is, a blessing.

Obama? Yeah, a photograph. I'm fuming over the "change". Of course it will be pointed out that I will fume over nearly anything that comes from him. But there goes a simple tradition, a stately one, a Presidential one. And that's coming from someone who very much appreciates photography as art. Though appreciates, as well, tradition in certain appropriate times. Well, there are no rules amymore, we live day to day. Make the shyt up as they go along.

I did have to chuckle, when AOL ran the "Who'll miss Bush when he's gone?" article, and when you opened it, you saw him surrounded a bunch of shirtless men in Africa. I don't believe that was intentional, for the laugh, but honestly, I really DO think you'd have to go at LEAST that far to see anyone pulling out their hankies at his moving on. Like the bumper sticker says: "The End of An Error."

I love it! last week in a suburban working class neighborhood iwas astounded by the number of anti bush bumper stickers. i would think these were the very people who elected him...twice.

Meanwhile, I just hope Obama keeps a low profile between now and Tuesday, and that the Secret Service are more awake than they were when that guy in Iraq threw not one, but two shoes at Bush. It was the second throw I found most disturbing, really.
i read today that there will be more troops in dc to cover this, 40.000.  than there are in afghanistan. kind of sobering on both ends i think. i worried about him in bens chili bowl the other day. i suppose that was rather spontaneous and less threat than his going there regularly. i seriously considered going to dc next week, i went as far as taking a few vacation days. its only an 8 hour drive, but i think i wont. too much unknown about driving in dc this week. id read that they are planning on shutting down many streets and i get confused enough driving there. id prolly end up in georgia:)

It might as well been straight from National Lampoon. I swear I thought it was a photoshop joke.

I'll miss his global cosmoplitan finesse ...  smile

I imagine the dialoge went something like this:

"I'm one hep cat, Daddyo"

"GIMME that drum!"
"I'll trade ya a candy bar for it."
"Any oil around here, Ringo?"
"Speaka da lingo?"

"Screw it."

"Not real bright is he?"
"Hey! Check THIS move!

"HooOO! HooOO!"

"And in the great Christian Leader's name......... Amen!"

"I was great, wasn't I."
"Who needs a saxaphone with moves like mine?"
