Dirk Kempthorne Leaves Behind A Lovely Bathroom At Interior Department

82877210_phixr.jpgWhen Dirk Kempthorne took over as Secretary of the Interior in May 2006, he was appalled by the state of the interior... of his office bathroom. You see, it had no shower, refrigerator or freezer, vital staples of any adequate executive loo. Kempthorne took care of that. Al Kamen of the Washington Post reports that, at a cost of only $235,000 to the taxpayers, Kempthorne had the missing appliances installed and had enough money left over for some nice monogrammed towels.

Doesn't everyone have a kitchen in their bathroom?  It sure cuts back on the wasted time and energy of walking from one to the other.  If you can speed up your metabolism, you can eat and excrete in the same visit.  Or hey, cut out the middle-man, just dump the food right into the toilet!
------------------------------------

OK, I'm just trying to figure  out how that came to $235,000. How much does a fridge, and freezer cost in DC these days? The shower? OK, some remodeling required there, I guess, but what ... $200K's worth?? I presume it was already plumbed for hot and cold water, so couldn't be that. (And that's presuming he spent a combined $35K on the fridge and freezer.

So there musta been other stuff too (besides just the towels.) But then again, I would imagine he already had a mircowave, and coffee maker. Let's be generous and say the shower ended up costing $75K -- that he had it done in marble, with gold fixtures. That would leave $125K to play around with. If you had a bathroom with a shower, a refrigerator, a freezer, as well as the coffemaker and microwave -- (although this doesn't strike me as a guy who does of his own cooking) what else would one spend $125K on? I imagine there was a heat lamp installed in the ceiling for when he got out of his shower ... there's a couple of hundred dollars, if you include labor -- but now I wonder if labor IS included in this sum, or if it's all done by White House staff on salary, which I would imagine is the case, ergo ... the labor to install the shower AND the heat lamp wouldn't be included, right? So we'd be looking at only the material for the shower, then, which would reduce that allowable cost to ... what? Surely not still $75K for the tile and fixtures! Let's be overly generous and say those came to a whopping $5K, and add the $70K back into the balance of $125K. That leaves $195K minus the cost of the heat lamp ... $194,985.00 (It's a really GOOD heat lamp.)

Nope, just doesn't add up.

It would be curious to see what the other secretaries have -- who knows? Maybe they alll already had all those things. At any rate, I'm going to be doing some SERIOUS rethinking of my remodel HERE. Would be cheaper to buy the house on both sides of me, and put Mom in one of them, than fix up a crapper like that for her. And she already has her refrigerator/freezer and microwave.

But not monogrammed towels ...

$235K.  That is more than two of my home purchases combined.  Just how big IS this bathroom?  How many walls did they have to move?

I'd love to see the bids on this job.  Who in the world thought this was a reasonable price for a bathroom?

2008 Presidential Transition

The Congress declares it to be the purpose of this Act to promote the orderly transfer of the executive power in connection with the expiration of the term of office of the President and the inauguration of a new President.

The transfer of power from one administration to the next marks a significant moment in U.S. history.  The Presidential Transition Acts of 1963 and 2000 give the General Services Administration (GSA) a prominent role in this process.  They authorize the Administrator of GSA to provide the President-elect and the Vice-President-elect the services and facilities needed to assume their official duties.

Some of GSAs responsibilities in support of the President-elect include:

  • Providing temporary office space, parking, furniture, telephones, furnishings, supplies, IT equipment, mail management, payroll, financial, contracting and other administrative services for the transition team;
  • Consulting with Presidential candidates prior to the general election, to develop a plan for computer and communications systems that will support the transition between the election and the inauguration;
  • Paying for travel, printing, postal services and other expenses;
  • Developing in collaboration with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) a transition directory to help familiarize key Administration officials with information about each department and agency;
  • Coordinating orientation activities with high level nominees and appointees; and
  • Supporting the Presidential Inaugural Committee

In addition, GSA provides a full suite of services to the outgoing President and former Vice-President as they transition from office.  These responsibilities include:

  • Providing office space during the transition as well as a permanent office, communication systems, IT support, financial management, human resources management, telephones, parking, furniture, vehicles, office equipment, mail management and administrative support services, such as payroll and financial services, contracting, and other appropriate services;
  • In collaboration with the National Archives and Records Administration provides support to former Presidents in the establishment and maintenance of their libraries.

The GSA (?) approved it. Can you IMAGINE what the transition is going to cost us with them in charge?

While Kempthorne was busy in his bathroom, his department was plagued by a massive scandal. According to a report from the AP last September, 13 former and current employees working in Denver and Washington that were tasked with handling billions of dollars in oil royalties allegedly rigged contracts, accepted gifts and even engaged in sexual relations with oil company employees.

good grief. its so discouraging to hear this stuff happen in what seems like every aspect of government.  i wonder if its at all possible any more to have people work in a govt job and actually do the job with the people in mind.

Oh they had some of the people in mind. At upscale restaurants and in motels, ski resorts, other trips, ...in all types of other places and compromising positions. "Allegedly".  Oil whores are people too!

An investigation by the department's inspector general Earl Devaney cleared Kempthorne of wrongdoing because the General Services Administration approved and partially funded the project.

Today in Boise, Idaho, Kempthorne touted reforms he's made to the department with a straight face.

Colorado Senator Ken Salazar has been appointed by Barack Obama to succeed Kempthorne. I guess they'll have to get some new towels.

Apparently this Interior Secretary took the job title literally. Didn't fully  comprehend he was the gatekeeper of everything OUTDOORS.  And no, the incoming admin doesn't need new towels, they simply need a SOI with the same initials. reading.gif
