What was the point of the pretzel choking scene? Other than to make the audience wish it truly ended that way? The scene just didn't go anywhere.

i took it up as his mindless way of going thru the world. a good football game, some beer and a bowl of pretzels and he was in heaven. its sort of the way he approaches everything else in the movie, gulping it down without chewing on it first?

Great metaphor, but it was lost in the movie - at least on me.

I finally saw this movie yesterday. I thought it was slow at times, and it's truly a story that goes nowhere.

yes, i thought that too and wondered if that was deliberate. then too the lead up seemed to be that jeb was to be the annointed one and W stepped on his toes and went on to ruin the bush name and i thought that was perhaps the point of all of that drifting. he fell into this and fell into that an didnt do well at anything sort of his drifting without a plan gave the movie that feel?

I remember thinking, how are they going to end this thing? The Rice character was very distracting. She obviously landed the role because of her looks. Her voice and mannerisms were completely wrong. She had that nasaly (sp??) voice that reminded me of Lea Thompson in Back to the Future when she was playing the old woman.

i was trying to recall, as i watched this, if id ever heard condi say anything and i couldnt think of a thing. i cant call up the sound of her voice as i can powell or cheney. it made me wonder if that was what she was really like but i found her very disagreeable.

Richard Dreyfuss was brilliant in his role. He totally nailed it. Brolin played GW very well. Like you said, you almost forget it's not Bush. True to form, Oliver Stone threw in a few scenes that have nothing to do with anything. What was the point of the pretzel choking scene? Other than to make the audience wish it truly ended that way? The scene just didn't go anywhere.

i saw this movie tonight. it was interesting. the actor who played bush is fabulous in it, you almost forget its not bush. its a somewhat sympathetic portrayal of him but it leaves you thinking that hes really not the most mentally stable person in the world.(huge understatement)  and hes like a tragic greek figure as he slowly comes to understand how those around him have used him. dreyfuss is great too in his role as is the actor portraying powell. colin powell comes off very well in the movie. he seems to be the only one who has the interests of the us and bush in mind. the woman who plays condoleeza rice plays her as a shrewd yet spineless yes woman that leaves you really hating her character.  i wonder if bush will watch it and what he will think of how they have characterized him?

Yeah, he's great. And an incredibly gifted musician, too -- all those scenes where he's playing piano in his apartment? That's really him playing. Know how he started out? Doing stand up comedy. :)

really? lol thats wonderful. his crabby thing feels so real. id bet nobody dares approach him for an autograph.

It's a lot cheaper (or at least it used to be) to shoot a film in Canada (and Arizona) because of the unions. Arizona is a right-to-starve errrrrr "work" state, so they don't have to pay union wages here if they don't want.

how do they get around that? ok canada i can see but in az?

Could you tell she's British?

no, but she really didnt say anything. she tittered a lot and tsk tsked but maybe had 3 real lines in the movie despite being in most scenes. her performance was all in the facial expressions and she did a bang up job conveying the sort of mysterious, what does she really think, kind of presence that the real condi has exhibited all along. shes an extremely bright woman and one would think shed be a bit more outspoken in her views but she remains sort of a mystery of far off looks and little verbalizations.

It's a werid thing, really, but for some reason, even though I know well about learning dialects for roles, how common it is, I find British actors employing American accents fascinating. I can hardly watch either "Family" or "House" without watching for a slip up

i was shocked when i first heard that he was a brit. he sounds like the midwest or northeast. i cant imagine switching back and forth like that. i wonder which he uses in his daily life in the us when hes paling around with friends?

and I hear even the new "Wonder Woman" will be a Brit. -- all using American dialects ... which begs the question, of course: why are the Brits invading American TV? The answer's probably similar to the same question about Mexican workers coming in, only on a different scale: British actors are willing to work for less $ than American actors (and by actors, I mean their agents.)

ive noticed a lot of canadian shows too especially during the writers strike. they are very distinctive.  i suppose the moolah does play a large part in this tho i would expect that they have to move here during production and that would come with its share of expense. maybe our tax structure is better so they come here? i am not sure how that works tho. would a uk citizen who works here have to pay dual taxes?

This film is one of the few things my Mom and I have agreed upon in the last almost-ten weeks: we both want to see it. Of course that would mean our both being away from the house without the dog for several hours, and that couldn't happen, and even if it could, the whole wheelchair-sitting up that long thing would be prohibitive. I suppose we'll wait until it comes out on DVD at this point.

From the trailers and stuff I've seen this looks like the role of Josh Brolins career. Too bad he has a short fuse, big bourbon thirst (so far good casting) however, he likes to hit his wife. police.gif, Diane Lane heart.gif. Seems the cops were pretty frequent visitors to the Lane/Brolin home for domestic calls, even got arrested for battery on her. I think she finally kicked him out during this filming. Apparently he doesn't agree with Shreveport police that five dudes embroiled in a bar fight constitutes a "brawl". Slammer. Anyway, I'm looking forward to eventually seeing it on regular tv, I won't pay to see anyone who raises their hands to a woman. I happened to catch a few minutes of him as the guest this past SNL, he seemed pretty calm. Maybe he's matured. I guess it's possible.

it will prollly be out on video shortly after the election. or maybe before if it seems politically expedient to do so.  it does synthesize the whole of the last 7 years and show who knew what and when they knew it and the reasons why they did it.  the whole wmd thing is discussed.  supposedly all of those in white house scenes were based on real events and one thing that caught my attention is the first place where they discuss invading iraq as a preemptive strike. the possibility of wmd are discussed as well as the lack of real intel that confirms it and bush is present but oblivious to the argument and toward the end of the movie the same things are discussed among the same people but the bush character says why didnt anyone tell me this? in the movie he was told but with spin and its his lack of intellectual curiosity that causes him to miss the point.
the karl rove character looks like a jovial nerd who understands numbers and doesnt have a stake in the middle east as a new american frontier which was a surprise. i would have thought he was one of the big players in that. at one point in the discussions someone points to him and says and why is he here in this room? only jeb has responded publically to this movie. that surprises me too.

So I went to the movies tonight to see spike lees new flick. ok movie btw tho its all over the place in terms of message and "style." however the surprise event was the trailer for oliver stones new movie W set to open in october.  i doubt the timing is coincidental:) while they apparently do not say that W is Bush, they do ID some of the characters as Rove, rummy and condi. the actor portraying W is the spitting image of bush too. anyway it looks like quite a movie. id post the trailer but im not on a fast computer at the moment and it would take forever to load the flash software to do that.

and a ps for the movie fans. sad to see that paul newman died earlier today.  id heard that hed been sick for awhile.  his daughter states that he wants to be remembered for his charity work above all else. seemed like a nice guy.

I must have seen an ad for this on tv, because I'm sure I knew it was coming out. Here's a link to the trailer:

It's definitely about George, and doesn't look like a flattering documentary.

thanks cat. yeah no doubt it is about george tho it does say based on a true story which, to me at least, says that liberties were taken with the script. its interesting that this kind of movie might be made about a sitting president and not have a whole lot of flack happen. i wonder if that has to do with his lack of popularity or if the movies release hasnt become clear to the world at large.
