ill be curious to see if anyone shows up. im thinking there are two things here that speak a whole lot louder than any (cough) concern about the plight of women. one is ratings and the second is the political affiliations of the organizers. i expect DL will prolly wade out and visit the crowd and make it a part of his show tues, helping him in his ratings fight with the new conan tonight show. i also expect mr leahy to be very vocal helping him in his plight to attain a more visible presence in american politics. meanwhile, also during this time in manhattan, 3 women will really be raped within the city limits, 10 will lose their jobs for reasons having to do with gender, 10,000 will face some sort of abuse at the hands of a loved one and on and on we go.

The firestorm got worse when Palin attacked Letterman for the joke, and accused him of making the joke about her 14-year-old daughter Willow getting raped.
Letterman claimed he made the joke about Bristol Palin and her pregnancy, but Palin attended a Yankees game last week with Willow instead. Sarah Palin's continued comments against Letterman have spawned calls to fire David Letterman, from citizens and even a few lawmakers.
New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb recently wrote to CBS CEO Les Moonves in hopes that he would fire David Letterman. Kolb wrote that firing Letterman would send a message that CBS would not stand for "demeaning and degrading comments about women."

Lemme ask this straight up, how is this any different than Dom Imus doing what Don Imus does for a bazillion years by referring to several of the Rutgers College womens basketball players as nappy headed hos? Specifically if, that is, African Americans continue to set a societal example of their own references to each other with disparaging remarks and attack videos on youtube?
i dont think there is much difference between the two and im not sure that DI should have been canned for what he said either tho i think its horrid that he said it. i think the silencing of idiots only drives what they (and those who subscribe to this kind of thinking)say underground and into the shadows where it grows like mold and ya cant reach it because you dont know its there. id like to see people step up and challenge this kind of stuff and allow people in general to have that kind of open discussion. most of this stuff is based in ignorance and education is more the answer to that than is silencing. there are 3 groups that come to mind where it seems its ok for comedians to make jokes and have it be an ok thing to laugh and those are women jokes gay or lesbian jokes and fat jokes. there are prolly more but those are the ones that i see most often.
Really, DL could have let the bad jokes end at "slutty flight attendant look".
and that may be offensive too depending upon the context. if someone cultivated the "slutty flight attendant look" they (a) havent been on a plane in 20 years.youre more likely to find a jowly 50 year old with 30 years of experience than you are a sex kitten:) and (b) is working that look for a particular reason which if, one is running for election, is on the table for discussion, otherwise not.

which is the reason i found the oh i was speaking of the 18 year old a bit convienient. not that i think commenting on the 18 year old is ok either. while i do think palin was within her rights initially to verbally slap DL for his comments i think shes done an equally fine job of exploiting this kid all over again by making the talk and news show rounds making sure that everyone who hadnt heard it before hears it now which imo reinjures the kid by trying to get as much political mileage out of this as possible. i dont think letterman should lose his job over it but i do hope that this results in his thinking a bit before he brings someones kid into the equation or makes light of a young womans sexuality. imo hes no different here than the wack job chef gordon. yanno, i remember back when chelsea clinton was a young first kid some members of the media made jokes about her appearance which were horrid. and as i recall similar comments made about amy carter also for her appearance and yes i think all of this falls into the category of misogyny and needs to be addressed and not in a politicized way. the reason i feel its important is that these kinds of jokes are the building blocks of institutionalized sexism and are part and parcel of constructing "the way things are done" with regard to women.

Exactly, no matter who the target. And the proof is in the audience. They laughed. A guarded type of awkward laughter, but laugh all the same. That's as disturbing, to me, as Jeremiah Wright proclaiming this week that "those Jews up there" won't let him near Obama right now. Bottom line is there are two types of genuine apologies, one of which wasn't spoken and the other that requires time for the behavior to either continue or be rethought. The very bottom line is an apology consists of two words "I'm sorry". Not additional "jokes".

This isn't righteous indignation, this political manuvering for more time in the spotlight, and it's working.

hmmm i think he went over the line here with his comment. the kid in question is only 14. imo palin may be fair game since shes put herself out there for office but the kids arent, especially the ones who have no choice in the matter. 14 is a rough age for anyone let alone a kid whose mother is in the public eye. (what is the happiness or satisfaction with life score of adults whose parents were high achievers or famous?) and a lot of who you view yourself as at 14 comes from the reflection of others. i think letterman owes the kid an apology.
