The original number of GM dealerships scheduled to close next month was estimated at near 800. It's now moving closer to 1100 or 1200. Each of those will create a new cluster of unemployed. That said? The first thing that popped to my head was where the arbitrary figures for the cash for clunkers came from? A dream? vision, did someone think they saw these figures carved into a tree or in the sand somewhere? What business does the government have appraising used cars, how will it be bankrolled? How will anyone benefit from getting themself into further debt by going from a "clunker" to a new car loan?

i can see a few ways that it may help, first it reduces inventory which stimulates production which stimulates new jobs. whether those jobs remain in the us is key for me. ive heard that some of these companies will ship most of the manufacturing jobs to mexico and that should have been one of the things covered in the fine print of the bailout paperwork. also there are many new cars that, without all the bells and whistles, are very low priced. a ford focus stripped might go for 9 or 10k tops. add in some dealer incentives and this govt voucher and that new car might cost 4 or 5k depending on the amount of the voucher. while i do agree that most of america has been trained by these financial interests to spend beyond their means a new vehicle for 4 or 5k is smart buying imo. the other cautionary item here will be the low cost soon to be no more cars like saturns, people can get some real bargains on those in the coming months but getting them serviced may be a problem down the road or so we are told.

'Cash for Clunkers' Introduced in Congress

Got an old gas-guzzler in your driveway? Legislation that was introduced yesterday may soon allow you to trade it in for cash - up to $4,500, depending on the car. Said Sen. Charles Schumer, "This is an even better trade-in offer than they could get from any car dealership."

"Cash for Clunkers," as the program is being called, aims to get millions of fuel-inefficient vehicles off the road to help lower our reliance upon foreign oil, and reduce emissons and pollution. According to the Associated Press, by its fourth year the program would save between 40,000 and 80,000 barrels of fuel a day. The estimated cost of the program is between $1 and $2 billion.

The newer the vehicle, the more cash you'll get for it. If your vehicle was made before 1998, you'll get $2,000, while vehicles from 1999-2001 will get $3,000 and any vehicles made after 2002 will get $4,500. A person can also claim the equivalent dollar amount in public transit fares. The cars must be driveable, and must have a fuel economy rating of less than 18 miles per gallon. Once turned in, the old vehicles would be taken apart for scrap.

This is the most absurd thing I have heard all week. Though it's only Monday morning I am pretty sure I'll feel the same at the end of the week.

i thought youd get a kick out of that. my first thought was why dont we stand on the corner and hand out moolah but then i read the news about the number of dealerships that are set to close so i suppose if the auto industry will die if we dont we might as well do something to encourage buying. if i had my druthers wed be spending the money on a good mass transit system that would make it possible for people to live without autos but thats prolly not something that mainstream american would buy into. we have a unique opportunity here to remake some of our outdated and unhealthy ways of doing things. id much rather we did so with bold vision and an eye for the future but in the absence of that i guess a car coupon can help with the immdiate problems

You were baiting the republicrat! shock and awe, just shock and awe. For that? I'll punch a tree or kick a penguin.

How do jobless, homeless, hungry, people take a new loan on? Or even qualify. I see things like this and I think, they think, we're stupid. Twenty five percent, or more, of the GM dealerships are closing. I wouldn't be at all surprised if people start stealing the "clunkers" and swindling the program before the feds know what hit them. How sad will that be when people walk outside to get in their "good" used car to find a decent job to replace the one at the dismantled dealership and their car's been stolen and sold in the cash for clunker program? This sounds like the Katrina debit card mess.

We've gone from managing the new car industry to used car sales. Of course I see where a viable consumer might think this a great idea. In the long run, to me, it just sounds like a way for us to further indebt ourselves as a nation, mount additional debt onto the backs of a people that mostly do not know how to manage cash or credit, nor care any longer. I just think we need to step back from the masters of industry mentality and get back to putting our House in order. Actually, it's been so long since the house was in order I can't recall the business model that was "working". Maybe it never really did work well.
