I just happened upon the Hawaii Christian Coalition official web site -- I was looking for some information on "Islam Day" Hawaii has evidently recently proclaimed, and wanted to see if the Hawaii Christians were in an uproar about it. Evidently they're NOT (which tells me something about the standing of the Christian community there, and leads me to believe they must have something similar, if not the same) and I was sort of stunned to see THIS (see below) right smack dab in the middle of their "welcome" page. It would seem Christians, at least some Christians, are no longer even being shy about being partisan republicans these days:
reminds me of something i saw on a bulletin board recently. a flyer for a church which was apparently soliciting new members and mentioning that god wants everyone to be wealthy and so they had a special prayer service for the purpose of praying for money, everybody welcome. i dunno im thinking those priorities are prolly not in the right place. for those churches that take a partisan stand im all in favor of having them lose their tax exempt status.

...on your note about the poor voting democrat.
Just a quick clarification: the Lincoln quote wasn't from me, it was from the Hawaii Christian Coalition -- I just copied and pasted the whole thing here. The quote from Jesus Christ was mine. :)

U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 American Community Survey, August 2007 What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?
Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;
Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954;
Cincinnati , OH (3rd)...since 1984;
Cleveland , OH (4th)...since 1989;
Miami , FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor;
St. Louis , MO (6th)....since 1949;
El Paso , TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor;
Milwaukee , WI (8th)...since 1908;
Philadelphia , PA (9th)...since 1952;
Newark , NJ (10th)...since 1907.

Interesting. Especially about Philadelphia. I had to look it up. I remember distinctly the mayoral race between Rendell and Rizzo back in the early 90s. Rizzo was Frank Rizzo, Jr. His father was mayor of Philadelphia back in the 70s. It was a very heated campaign, and promised to be close. Rizzo, Jr. died during the campaign and Rendell won over the replacement candidate by a landslide. Looking on a few websites, Rizzo Sr was a democrat, while Rizzo Jr was a republican.
Further on your note about the poor voting democrat. It seems to me that the dems are usually in favor of social assistance. They need social assistance. Of course, there is no way to determine whether it is the same poor people living in these depressed cities since 1952.
LOL...isn't it just possible that when people become poor move to the areas they can afford, and then move to the burbs when they can.
I will say, I like the quote from Lincoln. "...You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."
Permanently being the key word here. I understand a temporary leg up, but we have all known people to take that temporary help and try to manipulate it into a permanent situation.
