great site. thanks! that did list missing people by geography. i was surprised that there were not more in the northeast and also surprised by how many there were in the southeast and cali. wow. and apparently thats a very incomplete accounting. there are prolly 300 people listed there and 172,000 reported missing? thats the part i dont get. where do they all go?

Most murders are perpetrated by their loved ones. As far as actual stats re: missing individuals, I'm certain there's too many to keep track of, especially if you take into account transients or homeless. Sad state of affairs I know. Tragic. Excellent post.

For anyone who still has aol as a default homepage there was a photo series of murdered women and children this morning. Some of these cases date back 30 years or so but the striking thing about them was that most of these murders were at the hands of loved ones. Old news perhaps but I wondered what the statistics on this were and I cannot figger it out.  the murdered wives make the news for a day or so but what about the missing and possible murdered people who arent on the radar screen or whose disappearance is written off as leaving home? There are stats from the govt as to number of people reported missing but they apparently arent taken off the list when they turn up or are found to have died accidently etc. what i wanted to know was how many women have been reported missing in the us in the last 20 years who have not turned up alive and well and what patterns exist among them? some have made the news but most havent. and i dont want to leave it just at the women either.  im curious about this phenomenon of people who just vanish into thin air and the silence that surrounds this.  if anyone can find some reliable stats beyond the apparently muddled govt accounts on this id be grateful.
