EU-wide campaign seeks to eliminate gender pay gap

On the flip side of this, (and I am in no way trying to imply or say this justifies anything), I read recently that men are becoming unemployed at a far faster rate than women. Of course that's because employers are paying women less to do the same work and women tend to hold more part time positions then men do. And naturally those part time usually jobs come with no benefits like health or unemployment insurance.

So this pay disparity has kept more women working ... at a cost.

I heard this the other day too and i think they were referring to the US or perhaps the western countries?  this recession has hit all levels of employement here and many of those jobs lost were jobs that had been secure in the past the investment banking stock markets and manufacturing areas for instance.  these were probably jobs held by men. on a global level tho ive also heard that its expected to hit more women than men and thats especially important in developing countries.  the micro financing efforts that targeted women in the last decade made great strides in improving the living situations for all, not only the employed women. they were able to afford education for their children, the kids were less prone to disease due to better nutrition etc. those jobs will probably be lost.  i think we are beginning to see some movement with health insurance and benefits which may make it less important for employers to offer the jobs as part time no bennies only.  from what i, hearing the only way to deal with the entitlement programs is to reform health care and then there is the global disadvantage for those employers who are still providing those benefits.  maybe, fingers crossed, this problem will finally be solved

EU-wide campaign seeks to eliminate gender pay gap

Published: Wednesday 4 March 2009

Ahead of International Women's Day (8 March), the European Commission yesterday (3 March) launched a EU-wide campaign to help narrow the pay gap between women and men and boost gender equality.

"In today's economic climate, equality between women and men is more important than ever. Only by reaping the potential of all our talents can we face up to the crisis," said EU Equal Opportunities Commissioner Vladimír pidla.

The Commission's figures, released yesterday, show that women across the 27-nation bloc earn an average of 17.4 percent less than men.

Employment of women in the EU has steadily risen in recent years, according to the Commission. Currently, 58.3% of women are employed compared with 72.5% of men. Women still work part-time more often than men (31.2% of women and 7.7% of men), and they remain trapped in low-wage sectors, like health, education and public administration, the EU executive found in a 2009

The gloomy situation is worsened by the fact that women represent the majority (59%) of all new university graduates.

"The gender pay gap has multiple causes and needs multiple solutions. Tackling it requires action at all levels and a commitment from everyone concerned, from employers and trade unions to national authorities and every citizen," added pidla.

Involving women in politics and getting more women to fill high-level positions is seen as key to accelerating the drive for equality. The Commission yesterday presented an experts' report confirming the under-represntation of women in economic decision-making and European politics.

The experts said women make up just 31% of the European Parliament's 736 MEPs, 24% of their counterparts in national parliaments and 25% of national government officials.

According to the report, the central banks of all 27 member states are led by a male governor, while the workforces of the banks' key decision-making bodies are dominated by men (83% compared with 17% women).

Aware of the discriminatory environment in EU politics, the European Women's Lobby (EWL) launched a petition last September to have equal representation of women and men in all EU institutions.

"There will never be equal treatment in gender terms, as long as our decision-making institutions have a gender-biased membership. It is not just a matter of rights, it is a matter of sensitivity to the issues that deserve priority and to the manners of dealing with them," writes Giuliano Amato, a former Italian prime minister and vice-president of the EU convention on the future of Europe, on the EWL campaign's blog.

Hey, I did Dar and Lily in a short span of ten days. DeFranco was next but she pissed me off, though I still have a couple of weeks to change my mind.  She's still iconic, even if she isn't truly indie, just a contrived opportunist. An angry sorta Sara Mclachlan type, the is she or isn't she girl.  Well they AREN'T. And certainly the ambiguity went out the window with that one. I got within fifteen feet of Hasselback and Palin, but being RED they don't really count. I suspect there will be a good chance to see Clinton at MacDill in the very near future. I'll keep you abreast of my progress. I missed out on Martha Stewart while I was getting ready for Lily T, my niece got her though. Besides, there will only be one official jumping from the bushes moment, sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Oh yeah, next up will be Danica Patrick April 2,3,5.  She's a little weird with all that partial nudity, exhibitionism and stuff, but who am I to complain. I jump outta bushes. She's still ICONIC and it would be sweet to see a woman win a professional open wheel Indy Grand Prix.  It's a fantastic event. Loud, but awesome, city street racing. So yourself? I just remembered your bread lady btw, at least I'm not running around the grocery shooting pics of hot delivery chicks. Ooh, Target, I have to get to Target. Bye!

Okay, I got a little turned around. Owlies right, I have pics. Nesea, thanks for asking. I seem to be a "natural" with this stalking thing. Which it really isn't if you don't frighten or touch. Except a little and certainly when touched first. Now, I promise to pay better attention to who's asking what. I'm really glad it wasn't a toxic question and answer deal, that coulda sucked. ;)

Read the International Women's Day Reuters AlertNet articles:
- Women experience brunt of world's poverty ... more
- EMPOWERING: Helping refugee women help themselves in Nairobi ..

Benazir Bhutto was the first woman prime minister of a muslim country (assassinated 27/12/07)

You know my "meet famous, inspirational women and jump out of the bushes to make them talk to me goal"? Well, she was on the list for a very long time. Her's is a truly remarkable story, on so many levels. Largely her rise back to a position of "honor" and great respect has to do with the way Hillary Clinton handled her (for lack of better words) and her visit to the states way back when. Bhutto said she never forgot the way Mrs. Clinton treated her, against all state official warnings and insistance she was welcomed by the then first lady as a friend, ally and respected world figure.  I'm still not convinced that her assassination on December 07 was NOT the work of the US.

You know, each time I read the above stats I think what can I do today? Short of going out and just randomly kicking some dudes ass and handing him a copy of this before I walk away.

Ya know? We can post these things until our fingers break through to the other sides of our keyboards, and there are STILL going to be women who will look at it and sneer condescendingly, and snarl something like: "Well, they should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and stop whining about things, and turn their lives around, and quit  playing the vicitm -- I did!"

I don't know how to get THROUGH to those women. I really don't. It's not even so much about the utter absence of empathy -- it's about the unwillingness to even allow that perhaps millions, billions of women on this planet are doing everything they can to just survive ... and still losing the battle every day.

I don't know what, or where the key is, to unlock that door of ...

well, I'd better not finish that sentence.

Seems to me, "success stories" are of most worth when she who has risen to the top remembers all who helped her achieve whatever level of success she has, stops, and throws back her hand to pull another, behind her, on up with her.

"Maybe they don't WANT to be rich or powerful!"
oy.
