"Too Close To the Hole For Comfort"
Dialogue from inside house:
Me: "Hey, Mom! Where'd you put that chain you got for Buck? I thought I'd try it later today -- I know he's not going to like it, but--"
Mom: "RIGHT THERE, on the kitchen table"
Me: "-- I really need to go to the store for just five minutes and get some--I don't see it here"
Mom: "Well open your EYES! He was sometimes on a chain before we got him -- he'll be FINE. Don't be so negative."
Me: "They ARE open, Mom. I don't see it."
Mom: "It's in a package RIGHT THERE, Nightowl! Just LOOK! It's in a little package, right there!"

That's about the cutest thing I've seen. He looks so pleased with his work. Give the dog a bone.
Well, it can be exhausting work ...
Actually, I don't think it's a coincidence that his chosen place to dig is right over the sewer line. It's down about four or five feet right there, I think (hope) but it wouldn't surprise me if he heard water running down it at some point, what with all the plumbing work going on around here (as well as a few chunks of plaster from the knocked out bathroom wall -- Mr. Fixit didn't bother to put the drain plug in the bathtub when he began swinging that sledge hammer, and the drain was completely filled. GRRRRRRRR!) At any rate, the gopher population must be greatly relieved. (Not that we really have any out here in this teeming metropolis.) I had the new sewer line put in ... eh? Has it been eight years? Something like that. When they covered it back up with dirt, there was always a slight hill running the length of the yard to the alley sewer hookup, so he actually dug more than you would think, looking at the level yard. I figure just as well. Once Mr. Fixit finishes and LEAVES, then I can figure out what to do with the back yard (depending upon whether or not the dog stays with me, of course.) The sewer line guys told me initially to not level out the dirt over the line -- that it would eventually settle down and be level again on its own, but I think enough settling time has probably passed by now, so it's time to rethink that area completely anyway.
I have to keep reminding myself that he's still a puppy, really. These are his terrible twos, and once he matures a bit, and too, feels more settled ...
That WILL happen, right???? :)
