"former flame" and think of an old Spike Jones recording I once had of "My Old Flame." (My brother sat on a whole stack of the pre-vinyl 78's I had, and that was the end of that.) It seems, among other things, terribly archaic, and possibly slightly salacious.

omg! great movie poster. what did the chick behind bars do in this one? was she the scorned wife?  yep, the word flame can bring out that whole salacious angle and it really doesnt represent the relationship, does it? these two were still in the same home. i think of old flame as someone from the far removed past i guess.

That's the line that jumped off the page, for me.

yeah, i kinda doubt that she was killed in the backseat, more likely she was placed in the back seat after the fact but, id assume, its hard to move a body thats been dead for awhile and both of these women were in the mid to upper 50s so its hard to imagine that kind of lifting without help. the phrase dead weight comes to mind.

Lastly, I think it's a disgrace that HuffPo, where, in their formal statement, expressed thoughts and prayers to the f&fams of the "alleged" murderer and then gave a secondary nod to the murder victim.

yeah i thought that in poor taste also

That was in pretty poor taste, if you ask me. The woman snapped, the point she unsnapped was when she had her uh-oh moment and did the only sane thing she could do, kill herself. She should have done that first. I've been cheated on, it's in VERY poor taste, it was unforgiveable, and a nine year relationship came to an immediate end. I will never tolerate a cheater. Though, I'm not prone to murder one either. Just WHAT was going on in that back seat is really the question I think needs answering.

from the article i read it sounded like most of the blows came from behind and on the side so she must have surprised her initially. since she killed herself tho i doubt the real story will ever come out. thats a nice neat ending for the police dept, no further explanation required tho to me, the kind of rage that produces 200 hits with a screwdriver deserves some sort of investigation.

Actually, lastly REALLY, just wtf is wrong in Palm Beach County?

Police: Huffington Post Writer Stabbed Ex-Lover 220 Times With Screwdriver

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

A Huffington Post writer stabbed her former lover more than 200 times with a screwdriver and then tried to conceal the slaying, PalmBeachPost.com reported.

After committing the gruesome crime, Carol Anne Berger, an election correspondent for the Huffington Post, reported her former flame missing, then fatally shot herself a day later, police told the Web site.

Lt. Gary Chapman said Jessica Kalish, 56, a software executive, was found in the backseat of her BMW on Oct. 23, the Web site reported.

Kalish had been stabbed with a Phillips-head screwdriver 220 times, he said, with wounds concentrated in the back of her head, back, arms and face. A blow to Kalish's neck likely killed her, Chapman told the Web site.

Burger and Kalish recently had hired an attorney to sell their house and split the revenue. Kalish had met another woman and spent hours absorbed in cyber-dates with her new companion, PalmBeachPost.com reported.

"We are all very lucky to have Carol Anne be part of the Off the Bus family," a Huffington Post statement read, referring to the Web site's special election section. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of Carol Anne Berger and Jessica Kalish."

That's the line that jumped off the page, for me. Regarding other posts, this couple may well have been "married", somewhere, but not in Florida. Another thing I thought of was WWAD? Really Arianna Huffington, what would she have done? Is anyone aware of her background? Apparently she knee deep into "big oil". Why, I'm not sure, but the Getty family financed her marriage, to a homosexual man who left her for a man. What a shocker, but wwad? However, I do have an autographed copy of one of her books around here.

Lastly, I think it's a disgrace that HuffPo, where, in their formal statement, expressed thoughts and prayers to the f&fams of the "alleged" murderer and then gave a secondary nod to the murder victim. It's my understanding, although I haven't confirming information, these two women were married four years ago. They obviously owned a house together. Somehow "her former flame" seems pretty darn reductive about their relationship. JMO.

it does, im not sure if that is how it was categorized because the het community doesnt know what to do with our relationships or if its because when she called the police she said her roommate was missing and that caused a pause or maybe some other reason.  i did notice it too. my eye kept going back there but i wasnt clear why.

its a very extreme reaction and one that made me wonder what the relationship was like prior to the event. i wondered if there had been previous calls to the police or any kind of indication that this kind of violence was a possibility.

then too, apparently they were still living together while their home was being put up for sale and joint possessions disposed of but the murdered woman was apparently openly involved with someone else online while they were still in the same home. i get the financial aspect of this but it seems a bit cruel to do this. why not wait until the ties are cut? or at least be discreet about it when around the former partner.  not that this is any justification for 220 stabs with a screwdriver to the head, it isnt.

I'll make no bones about this. I have a very clear and strong opinion of anyone who "plays with" their new gf while still living with their "soon to be discarded" one -- especially right under the old one's nose, and or in the same house that was once shared with the soon-to-be ex. It is, IMO, one of the most cruel, and thoughtless things a person can do to another, and can feel, to the "ex" like being stabbed by a phillips screwdriver over and over and over again.

For me, it's a line just not to be crossed, regardless of the circumstance, and when someone does, I just -- I don't want to have anything to do with a person capable of that sort of behavior, period. I've had that thing done to me a few times. NEVER again. EVER. It's a kind of special self-centered cruelty I simply will not abide having directed at me, and have no tolerance for when directed at others. IMO, very little, if anything, trumps that sort of hurtful selfishness.

That's without someone fighting back. I was tired of doing it after 40 thrusts, but made myself continue.

It was a long time.

This woman allegedly stabbed her ex in the face and neck 220 times?

That's some kinda fierce hate.

Sure, the whole thing is tragic for both parties, and clearly the woman was out of her head, but... sheesh. Even in insanity, at some point after two minutes of repeated action (and for all we know she may have done this for ten or more) and before the 220th blow, SOME part of sanity MUST kick in.
JMO.

Geez.  There must be a better way to end a relationship.  I'm drinking coffee thinking of all the possible events that could bring a person to do this, and I can't think of a one.  They all seem trivial to me.
