They haven't won enough times in the World Series for anyone to make that sort of statement. 1980 was their last win, and I think we can all agree that the Phillies had nothing to do with Reagan getting into office.

Before that, the Phillies last won the WS in 1915. They did play in 1950, but lost to the Yankees.

Now, the Philadelphia Athletics, they were a team in the 191x years. I thought the Athletics changed their name to the Phillies, but that doesn't seem to be the case. *shrug*

well i can take the garlic down then! heh. the announcers retort to that was that nobody had won the presidency that hadnt won ohio and that mccain was not leading oh at that point anyway.

And congrats to the Rays, too! What a turn-around they made in the last year, maybe two. When it comes to the World Series, sure, it's nice to win, but in this case, that old speech about how it's nice just to be "nominated" (not applicable here, but anyway) really applied. Just to be one of the two teams IN the World Series is quite an accomplishment, and worthy of acclaim and pride.

i am just a wee bit bummed cause i really wanted to go to the game...sigh.

im confused. i thought i read that it was 3/4 phillies? was there another game to play if they had lost? if you buy tickets for games 7 and it doesnt happen, do you get a refund? ive always wondered about that.

the score of the game last night was phillies 4 rays 3.....going into game five, the phillies were 3 wins, rays 1.  if the phillies had lost, they all would have come back here to play game 6.  i had tickets to game 6, which would have been played tonight.  and yes, the credit card is automatically refunded since the game was cancelled....i already got my email saying my credit card will be credited....

dont know yet...the rays and phillies tied up last nights game 2 all in the top of the 6th inning and the game was called off due to rain.  tonight they are supposed to pick up at the game again at around 8pm (et) at the bottom of the 6th...if they play (cause the weather is supposed to be even worse today) and the phillies win, its over....if the rays win, they come home to play game 6 on wednesday.....

Good section, I like anythnig from third base down the line. You'll see the game. I have every confidence that tonights suspended game will be won by the Rays and brought home for the win. No doubt at all. They're playing like they play in rain all the time. And that can be alot of fun. Have fun, there'll be a game six. No doubt.

I know I said I would remain neutral.  However, I want it to be a close race.  I'm real disappointed at how the Rays are choking.  I do hope they win tonight so there will be a Game 6.  I'd love to see a Game 7.

Really, I'll be happy if the Phillies win, but I'd really like to see the Rays just come close.  They've worked so hard to get here.  They really deserve it.

Maybe, I just don't want the baseball season to end yet!

I thought it was one of the neatest things last night when the Philly pitcher (Blanton?) broke a 30 something year record for a pitcher hitting a home run. And, to do it in a WS. He deserved every moment of that ovation. Now, if Longoria, Pena and Upton would bring their bats to the plate we'd be in for a treat. Funny thing about a World Series is that there is always someone calling it a who cares series. Funnier still is nearly everyone has a who cares feeling about the Y*ankees and their "buying" pennants and titles. I really think this series has been good baseball, even last nights game. I didn't see it as a blow-out, but a challenge. And that nearly two hour delay the other night? That's just one reason we have a covered dome. I can't even stand the word Y*nkee anymore. Or David Beckham and his 250 million dollar SOCCER contract. eyepopping.gif

:) I remember feeling that way....
This year, though, for me, the season was pretty much over before it began.

Spectator sports is a cool thing (I'm a big Phoenix Suns fan too, and have been for a long, long time, and before that, it was the Sun Devils at ASU) but one irritating part is when "management" decides to trade a crowd favorite. I hate that, I really do. With the Diamondbacks, Gonzo was a good example. And what the hell is it with trading Randy Johnson, arguably one of the best pitchers on the planet, during his prime to the damn YANKEES (get it? giggle.gif ) and THEN, taking him BACK for his "back surgery" years??

I hate the Yankees -- and really, for one reason only: they have way too much money to make it a fair contest. I mean, really --  when you can (and do) buy the best talent on the planet and plop them down on one team, what are the odds of anyone beating them? And that, I suppose, is when and where it gets interesting, hunh. :)

I know the popular favorites to win in 2001 were the Yankees, because of the twin towers tragedy, but really, if you think about it, you could make a case for them being like England; established, and with a lot of history to go along with their money, and the Diamondbacks being more like America -- a much younger, scrappy underdog, bucking the odds. What a thrilling series that was, too. Wow. As a side note -- I can't tell you what a strange thing it was, so soon after NOTHING in the air to have all those stealth monsters and jets flying over my house on the way to do their fly overs at the stadium. Still numb from the TT attack, the whole thing was slightly surreal. I remember going out into my back yard, as I heard them approach, looking up and seeing them, and then coming back inside to see them on the TV set. It was, I think, a subtle (or maybe not so subtle) display of military might for not just us, or this country, but the whole world to see. I still remember that monster that flew over the stadium on what I think was game seven. Geezopetes, already.

And our stadium was even cool back then .... good ole "Bob." Who can't love a stadium named "Bob???" OK, it was "really" "Banc One Ballpark", but we all knew it was "Bob." Now? "Chase Field." hmm Sounds like someone always behind, to me.

After being a hoops fan for decades (my dad was actually at a basketball championship game the night I was born -- he had to be called out of the game over the PA system, and make it through a blizzard to the hospital, where Mom was in delivery listening to the game on the radio. Her first words to him when she saw him were: "Hawkeyes won, and it's a girl." blankstare OK, so I knew from the get-go where the priorities were in my family. Some of my fondest memories of time with my Dad were when just the two of us went to ASU to watch "Jumpin' Joe Frasier" et al. play college hoops ... but I've wandered ... what I was going to say was that after watching basketball for so many years, baseball, the pace of baseball, took some getting used to. Mr. Carrot's Mom, though, was a huge fan, so I was innundated fairly early on. I think (seriously) Mr. Carrot's first phrase was "Go Diamondbacks!" I remember lots of walks to that stadium pushing his stroller, and how he would COMPLETELY throw every fiber of his little body into the "CHARGE!" after the "da da da DA da DAAAAAAAAAAAAA..." LOL. Really, his whole body would tense up, and both arms would reach towards the heavens.

And really, if Kim was on the pitcher's mound that night (when ARE they going to get an "eyeroll" smiley, ANYWAY?" Whom would YOU rather watch? The whiney sideballer, or the most ardent fan the Diamondbacks had ever known? That one's easy, isn't it?  smile

One of my favorite drivin' tunes (and on a couple of my playlists) is "Cheap Seats." No, an afternoon at Bob wasn't exactly the subject matter of that tune, but even so, there is something inherently ... what? "American?" about it ... something which crosses generations, even if it's "new to you" that makes it ... "special" and regardless of all the steriod junk, and other nonsense, still "clean" feeling. Aw hell ... I'll just come right out and say it: "wholesome" -- and wholesome in a good way. "Unfettered," maybe. Much as I love basketball, it doesn't allow a lot of wiggle room for fans to interact with one another. With baseball, though, there's plenty of time, and maybe, really, when it comes right down to it, that's one of the best things about going to the ballpark with friends -- not just the "we're in this together" thing (although that's there too) but also the "hey, WE are in this together" thing.

On to game six and seven say I!

da da da DA da daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa........
